All the Live-Long Day

Caffeine is my co-pilot

In our ongoing series on caffeine and how we are all friggin’ addicts, comes a new article from Scientific American regarding the benefits of taking small doses of caffeine rather than the super-jolt we get from a double-mocha-frappuccino first thing in the morning. Turns out that we do better with a 2-oz. shot every hour. Makes sense to me. Now if only they could put it in one of those pneumatic syringes from all the action movies.

Article Here

I think the best thing about this article is not the actual scientific evidence from some study, etc. But rather that it comes from the journal Sleep. Irony aside, I would have never guessed that a publication would be called simply, Sleep. I wonder what the editorial content is like – must have to be pretty original to keep the audience, um, awake. Can’t speak for everyone, but when I come home at the end of the day, the last thing I would ever feel like reading is a mag about sleep. Oh whatever.

White Man’s Guide to Minority Scholarships

Well, it makes sense. In this post-Tiger Woods era, everyone is a minority of some kind, and I’m sure there are scholarships out there for everyone.

If you’re a white guy who feels there is no money out there for you, then you’re wrong. Apparently. Came across an interesting article that tells you what to do.

Article Here.

This would have really come in handy if we at twentyhood were still in school. Or if we were white males. I love student loans.

Don’t Marry Bond

Bond, James Bond

Sure, he may be handsome with those chiseled good looks, but chances are, that he’s not marriage materials. Of course I am speaking in the general. A new study out of U of Michigan shows that men with very masculine features don’t make the best mates in the long term.

Article Here

On the other hand, men with rounded faces and fuller lips do make good husbands. Good news for fellas like me, whose face has been roundening quite continually every since my teen years. And squaring too, which is another story.

Episode 026: Freezy Friday (Nightlife, take 1)

Bonetti, all wrapped up

Scott and Laura sit down on a very cold Friday in January. Too bad they can’t stay on topic. A show about nothing, essentially.

10 Reasons Men Don’t Want Sex

Men Don't Want Sex

Oh, I can hear the laughter already. Seriously though, an article from WebMD about 10 legitimate reasons men may defer sex. I suppose number 10 is a bit of a cop-out, but I won’t spoil it for you.

Article Here

Keep these in mind next time you think about booty calling me at 3 am. Also keep in mind WebMD has been disputed by many doctors. In fact, 2/3 of facts and statistics on the internet are completely made up.

I think I’ll add one to the list: She might be a robot!

More Women Choosing Engineering (but not as a profession)

I think the title says it all. According to a study of some bullshit, by the people who study things, more women are earning degrees in engineering, but the profession remains largely male-only.

Article HereĀ

I found this interesting as a Engineering Degree-holder-but-non-practicer. I observed that over the course of my university years, the ratio of men to women in my classes leveled out some, leading me to conclude that it’s on the men who drop out. There was a similar article posted back in July.

One positive by-product of the increased number of female engineering students is that we can finally have enough of a population to choose from, allowing a few geeky-and-entrepreneurial students to put together the Girls of Engineering photo calendar. I chuckled when I saw this because most of the girls I went to school with were, shall we say, average. This brings to mind a funny quote when Chris O’Brien remarked, about Kate Allen, who I sort of had a crush on at one point, “She’s pretty good-looking for an engineer”. Ouch.

Schools and Religion, the saga continues

Not that this has so much to do with life as a twenty-something, but here’s a look at Constitutional Rights and schools. An interesting read.

Suit Up

Strap yourselves in boys

As disgruntled young professionals, twenty-somethings are always confronted with the dilemma of how to dress at work. Considering we’re usually not the boss, a dress code of some kind is often imposed. And for those of us more fancier than the others, that means you’re wearin’ a suit … bitch.

Mark Cuban, Internet entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, rants on his blog about why he doesn’t wear a suit, and why he sees no purpose in the first place. If you ask me, it’s a bit overblown and I suspect some anger left over from childhood. Then again, I thank the gods every day I don’t have to faff around with a suit every morning at 7:30 am.

That’s My Man

Women want the same guy.

Women are a strange species. Following the recent post about how humour generally doesn’t work as a man-catching tactic, here’s a little tidbit of fem-sci.

Ah, Darwinism at work. Turns out that women are more attracted to men who are actually the object of another woman. Some say this has been true for years. But I, being skeptical and clueless, need hard facts, damnit. Check out the article, and dig how they designed the test. Hi-tech stuff.

Funny Chicks are not sexy.

Here’s an article from Psychology Today about why funny girls are that attractive to the average fella. This has long been a strange phenomenon, and was the topic of a recent episode on Weezy and the Swish, but is always worth a thought, and maybe some debate, among friends.

For the record, I don’t think funny girls are hot. I can’t really say why, but it feels bizarre to hear a girl tell a proper joke. We do, however, enjoy female laughter. Ironic.
