How to Soundproof an Apartment

Just this morning, in fact, I was awoken prematurely by the sound of my roommate clanging around with pots and pans! Literally. Who does that?

I’ve always wanted to soundproof a room or apartment, and luckily for us, Wired Magazine has an article with tips and tricks on how to do it while saving a bit of cash.

Hang some high-density fiberglass baffles on your walls and ceiling. They’ll improve the acoustics of the room and absorb some of the noise that would otherwise leak out.

Defilly worth a read if you’re a musician or just obsessed with vacuuming at odd hours.

73 Tips to Beat Debt

Also from ZenHabits comes a list of ways one can help keep the dragon of debt at bay, at least for a little while. Some of these are very useful, but I’m afraid most are obvious, such as:

    1. Don’t get into debt. Use cash for all your purchases and don’t take on any debt except home and auto.
    2. Spend less than you earn.

10 Books that Shaped My Life

twentyhood for dummies

From ZenHabits comes a list of books that have been known to cause profound and life-changing shifts in thought and/or operation. In other words, read these books! I’ve only read one, I’m ashamed to admit, and only another 2 I’ve even heard of.

So if you’re on the self-improvement kick, put down that copy of OJ Simpson’s If I Did it, and read on of these. Appropriately enough, most of them deal with life, money, careers, relationships, and other issues that are always relevant to twentysomethings.

Why Americans Keep Getting Fatter

Fat Americans

If asked “Why do Americans keep getting fatter?” the answer would seem obvious: it’s because we’re lazy, and we eat junk. Yes, that’s true, but why?

According to an article from AlterNet, it’s all part of the mismanagement by the Federal Government of farms, or as I like to call it, the Agro-Industrial complex. The Government has been issuing guidelines of that Americans should eat, but they fund exactly the opposite, and encourage (financially, that is) the growth and production of unhealthy foods.

According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the U.S. food supply has since ballooned by 500 calories per person per day, and per capita food consumption has increased by more than 200 calories per day — the equivalent of more than 20 pounds of fat per year.

I love random statistics.

How to Deal with your Crazy Boss

Jet-SOOOON!

Got a crazy boss? For your sake, I hope not, but chances are, you do. (that fact is disturbing in and of itself). However, there is hope — and a plan. From Bing comes a pretty lengthy list of ways to deal with your crazy boss, depending on which type of crazy boss you have. Here’s an example:

The Bully: Be ostentatiously loyal. Rationale: Bullies demand a visible show of fealty, day in and day out. This means looking out for his interests and bringing matters that could cause him discomfort to his attention before anyone else does.

Check it out, defilly worth a read for the chuckle factor alone.

How to Sleep More Efficiently

Since me now to sleep. Then to your offices, and let me rest.

Hollywood these days relies solely on comic books and cheesey sequels to draw audiences. More often than not, they fail to entertain. So I rely on sleep for my amusement. But like a staggering amount of adults, my sleep sucks lately and I find myself eternally tired.

A brilliant, and lengthy article from Ririan Project gives tips on how to improve the quality or your night’s sleep, if not the quantity. The article is packed with sciencey stuff like this:

A study completed this spring by Washington State University Spokane suggests that our sleep patterns are embedded in our bodies — perhaps in our very genes.

Certainly worth a bit of self-experimenting — the only thing we have to lose is our shitty half-sleeps and those groggy morning subway rides. Good riddance to those.

39 Ways to Live, not Just Exist

Being always a sucker to hard-hitting philosophical tenets on how to live life, I found this list of interested. From Dumb Little Man comes a list of 39 Ways to Live, not Merely Exist with such gems as:

Turn off the TV. How many hours will we waste away in front of the boob tube? How many hours do we have to live? Do the math, then unplug the TV. Only plug it back in when you have a DVD of a movie you love. Otherwise, keep it off and find other stuff to do. Don’t know what to do? Read further.

While some of these are clearly obvious, I haven’t yet had the courage to get out a pen and paper and actually tally up whether I am living, or just existing.

Stumble Upon’d

This past Sunday saw a spike in traffic to the twentyhood site, many of those visit coming via StumbleUpon. I’m not too familiar with the site, which is designed to let you share sites you’ve, um, stumbled upon. Apparently it’s a Firefox or Internet Explorer add-on of some kind.

So if you were part of, or responsible for the little bump in our popularity, please let me know by leaving a comment or sending an email. Does this have something to do with the most recent episode when I chatted with John January?

Either way, thanks for visiting, and tell your friends. Things have been hectic, but worry not — I’ve got loads of articles and things to post, so watch this space!

Coffee ‘could prevent eye tremor’

I’ve never been one to doubt the BBC, or science, and so I’m glad to know that should I ever suffer from Blepharospasm, eyelid tremors to you and me, coffee is a possible cure.

One or two cups of coffee a day seemed to reduce the risk of the condition, the team reported in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

There you have it. Rock hard science. Might wanna read the full thing to find out what’s up.
