Schools and Religion, the saga continues

Not that this has so much to do with life as a twenty-something, but here’s a look at Constitutional Rights and schools. An interesting read.

Welcome Back

Here is a little gem about the phenomenon of children moving home after college. Are they an economic burden on their parents? Is this the sign of a dangerous social shift? Find out.

By the way, they are calling it “adultolescence”. Personally, I think twentyhood is much catchier. For the record, the only person I know who didn’t return home after earning the bachelor’s is Jay, who landed squarely on my couch for a period after graduation.

The Biggest Gamble of Your Life (Is College Worth It?)

Came across a great article today about the ever-frantic economics of a University education. Lots of statistics and figures to mull over. Worth a read when you have a minute.

In 2005, young people (ages 18-25) in the US gambled $67 billion. Not in Vegas or online poker rooms, but on a betterment program called college. Their hope is that the monies they are spending will allow them to earn more money over their lifetime. Many are paying for this wager by amassing a mountain of debt that will take years to pay off. Is it a good wager? …

25 Signs that, Sadly, You’ve Grown Up

Or more appropriately, 25 signs you are no longer a university student. Damnit, we need to do the “out of college, now what” episode on the podcast. But, until then, check out this humourous, if not purile, list. Courtesy of this random website.

  1. Your house plants are alive, and you can’t smoke any of them.
  2. Having sex in a twin bed is out of the question.
  3. You keep more food than beer in the fridge.
  4. 6:00 AM is when you get up, not when you go to bed.
  5. You hear your favorite song on an elevator.
  6. You watch the Weather Channel.
  7. Your friends marry and divorce instead of hook up and break up.
  8. You go from 130 days of vacation time to 14.
  9. Jeans and a sweater no longer qualify as “dressed up.”
  10. You’re the one calling the police because those damn kids next door won’t turn down the stereo.
  11. Older relatives feel comfortable telling sex jokes around you.
  12. You don’t know what time Taco Bell closes anymore.
  13. Your car insurance goes down and your payments go up.
  14. You feed your dog Science Diet instead of McDonalds leftovers.
  15. Sleeping on the couch makes your back hurt.
  16. You no longer take naps from noon to 6 PM.
  17. Dinner and a movie is the whole date instead of the beginning of one.
  18. Eating a basket of chicken wings at 3 AM would severely upset, rather than settle your stomach.
  19. You go to the drug store for ibuprofen and antacid, not condoms and pregnancy tests.
  20. A $4.00 bottle of wine is no longer “pretty good stuff”.
  21. You actually eat breakfast food at breakfast time.
  22. “I just can’t drink the way I used to,” replaces, “I’m never going to drink that much again.”
  23. 90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work.
  24. You drink at home to save money before going to a bar.
  25. You read this entire list looking desperately for one sign that doesn’t apply to you and can’t find one to save Your sorry old ass.

So, how would you, as a twentysomething, rate your own grown-up-edness? I’d say I’m pretty much there, although I don’t drink, so maybe I was never a kid to begin with. Or something.

Things to Learn in School This Year

A bit out of context, considering we haven’t had out ‘official’ leaving University episode, but here is an interesting article about the type of stuff universities don’t teach students. Pretty spot on in my experience…

A tale of personal debt

I came across this story and figured “what is more twenty-something than massive personal debt”. The story is mainly about student debt but talks about credit cards and other financial woes. A first-hand account of one particular woman, not necessarily the case for everyone…

Article Here

And of course, since the story got Dugg, there were a million comments and responses - read one such negative rebuttle here

And for the record, I have about $43,000 in student debt. And that’s having paid off a bit, so let’s just make it $44,000 for sake of argument. I don’t know if that’s with the interest added or not. Otherwise its closer to $51,000. Good times.
